Greetings to the #EverCougs community!
It has been an exciting month of new partnerships and expanded opportunities at Washington State University Everett! First, WSU announced that our campus had the second-highest increase in student body across the system by percentage. Our continued growth, which comes without any new programs, underscores the need for higher education in this region that we are designed to address as we grow. We are meeting students where they are, with programs that fit their lives and prepare them for exciting careers in our state’s economy.
Keeping our mission of access to postsecondary education at the forefront, I convened a P-20 Council of leaders in education from our region that included the presidents of our partner community colleges and the superintendents of our region’s school districts. Our goal is to assess the educational pathways and opportunities, from preschool through higher education, to strengthen the system connections as students transition through each chapter in their educational journeys. Working in concert with our partners, we can better align our offerings with the desires of our students and the needs of local industries, so that student learning and career opportunities are connected.
Part of our focus on career-connected learning included a recent visit from local high school students with an expressed interest in a health-care sector career. In partnership with the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, we opened our doors to these students for a day of learning and inspiration. Students in attendance learned about suturing, ultrasounds and moving patients in wheelchairs while connected to intravenous therapy, and exploring the new Range Health mobile care unit that will offer health care educational and access opportunities statewide starting next year. It was a perfect opportunity to highlight the career pathways available to students locally through Everett Community College, WSU and our Everett University Center partners.
Dr. Jacob Murray took that same message to the Aerospace Futures Alliance 2019 Aerospace Summit this month, anchoring a panel on higher education. Dr. Murray thanked companies like The Boeing Company, Electroimpact, Crane Aerospace & Electronics, OceanGate, and Fluke Manufacturing for supporting our students with interdisciplinary, industry-related capstone projects for our students. Our growing partnerships with industry leaders assists us in providing the project-based learning that makes WSU Everett graduates ready to soar in their careers once they graduate.
We want to share information on the types of project-based learning and career development opportunities at WSU Everett. That is why we are hosting an open house for high school and community college students, teachers and counselors, and partners for Coug Preview Night on October 30 from 4 – 7:00 p.m. Prospective students and our educational partners who support them will tour WSU Everett with our Student Ambassadors and learn about programs directly from our faculty and staff. Please share the registration link for Coug Preview Night with those you know at our local schools for whom this information will be transformational.
Another important element to providing local access to education is scholarships for deserving students, which is why I ask you to make a contribution today to the WSU Everett Ray Stephanson Leadership Fund, which was generously established by our partners at The Boeing Company. Stephanson Scholars are student leaders with a desire to use their education to benefit the community, qualities in keeping with the fund’s namesake who served as mayor of the City of Everett from 2003 through 2017. That’s a mission that Pat McClain understands well, having served with Mayor Stephanson to help establish this campus. Pat has continued to serve that mission as a key member of the WSU Everett Advisory Council. I was proud to recognize Pat with the Chancellor’s Champion Award for his two years of service as council chair and his career of service to our community, building partnerships for student success and creating opportunities for future generations.

Rolling clinic linked to WSU medical school comes to Everett
“It’s just a fantastic day,” said Chancellor Paul Petrie, the leader of Washington State University Everett, as a small crowd got a look at the new William A. Crosetto Mobile Health Care Unit.The traveling clinic, with two exam rooms, is the first of what planners hope will be a fleet of mobile units operated by Range Health, a new nonprofit health network. Everett’s Pat McClain honored for service to WSU Everett
Pat McClain was honored by WSU Everett Chancellor Paul Pitre for his service as chair of the WSU Everett Advisory Council and years of dedicated effort to establish and grow WSU’s Puget Sound campus.
“Pat was integral in the establishment of Washington State University Everett,” Pitre said on Friday at a meeting of the advisory council. “Since then, he has steadfastly worked to grow Washington State University in our community, build partnerships for student success and create opportunities for future generations.” Read more…

Everett Herald | WSU Everett grows this fall
Enrollment at WSU Everett has grown by the equivalent of eight full-time students this fall, up nearly 3% from fall of 2018.
That number now stands at 283 for the campus on Broadway, according to statistics released Wednesday. By contrast, the head count of full- and part-time students at WSU Everett is 320 this fall, an increase of 32 students from a year ago. Read more…
