The WSU Alumni Association is excited for Cougs to join the exclusive, online movie club, Reel Conversations with Cougs. This self-paced, virtual movie club is hosted through a private forum where you will discuss “movies that matter” as all film selections are connected to history and social issues. The forum provides a platform to chat about what you’re watching and the option to make friends with other Cougs.
Reel Conversations with Cougs is completely FREE and open to all WSU alumni, students, and friends. Movie selections will be available to stream online via Netflix or Amazon Prime. The group will watch a range of different movies including box office hits, Oscar winners, independent films, and documentaries. If you love watching movies, care about history and social issues, and want to stay connected with other Cougs, this is definitely the place for you!
You’ll receive regular emails to help you get the most of your movie-watching experience, from suggested timelines to moderated online discussions facilitated by Professional Book Club Guru.
The WSUAA movie club, Reel Conversations with Cougs, will hold its discussion on Indian Horse from November 1 – November 30, 2021.
Indian Horse is the book-to-screen adaptation of the late Richard Wagamese’s novel. Also called Indian Horse, the book follows young Saul throughout his life from pre- to post-residential school. Young Saul finds solace in hockey and becomes a star player. This movie will make you feel a range of emotions as you gain a peek into Canadian history.
Is there any cost to participate in the WSU Alumni Online Movie Club?
Participation is free for WSU alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, fans, and friends. Reel Conversations with Cougs Movie Club is sponsored by the WSU Alumni Association. There’s no requirement to be a member of the WSU Alumni Association. But if you are interested, you can learn about membership here.
How do I view the movies?
All movies will be available to stream online via Netflix or Amazon Prime. Movie club participants are responsible for watching the movie on whatever platform you choose.
How do I join the online movie club?
Create an account on the Reel Conversations with Cougs WSU Alumni Association Movie Club site. After signing up, PBC Guru will email you a link to our movie club online forum where we invite you to introduce yourself.
What exactly is PBC Guru and what do they have to do with the movie club?
PBC Guru is a book and movie club management company that works with businesses, alumni associations, and professional societies. WSUAA is teaming up with PBC to put this program in place for alumni, students, faculty, and friends. You can check out their website at www.pbc.guru if you want to see more of what they do.
How often will movies be watched, what is the time commitment and what are the expectations?
We will watch one movie a month. The movies will take an average of two to three hours to watch beginning to end. If you have between two to three hours a month to spare, you can make it happen. We hope you will participate in the online discussion forum after watching the movie and engage with your fellow Cougs.
Will there be any in-person meetings of Reel Conversations with Cougs?
No, the movie club will be entirely online. You can participate anywhere you have internet access and on days and times that are convenient for you.
How do Reel Conversations with Cougs Movie Club discussions work?
The movie club will have a moderator from PBC Guru who manages the forum online and provides additional content related to the movie. The moderator will post questions to the movie club platform, share relevant articles, and facilitate conversation about topics in the movie. Members will be encouraged to post and share as well. This online only format allows for ongoing conversation and makes it easy for watchers to connect with each other through the forum.
How do I make a forum profile?
We’re using a private forum to host the virtual book club so it’s easy to connect with fellow alumni. During our sign-up process on the PBC Guru webpage (link above), you will enter the information to auto-generate your free profile. After you complete the sign up, PBC Guru will send you a link to the forum and you can begin to post right away!
What if I still have more questions?
Feel free to send an email to info@pbc.guru and we will be happy to help.
