Boeing Scholars Spotlight: Project AVIA
How do you test a plane’s resilience without endangering real wildlife? This interdisciplinary Boeing Scholars team tackled that question head-on with Project AVIA—Artificial Bird Family & Simulated Projectiles Development. Sponsored by Boeing and guided by mentors Mohammed Kabir and Alan Byar, the team worked to develop a standardized prototype for artificial bird strike testing used in aircraft certification.
Blending engineering, business, communication, and data science, the team included James Kaku and Luis Carlos Nariño (Mechanical Engineering), Kendyl Bourland (Communication), Rachel Wong (Business), and Scott Sensiba (Data Analytics). Their work didn’t stop at the lab—they also pitched their concept at the WSU Business Plan Competition, bringing aerospace innovation to a broader audience.
From safety testing to startup thinking, these Scholars are helping shape the future of aviation—one prototype at a time.
