Sidney Shea was searching for ways to engage in the Puget Sound communication industry when she discovered that Washington State University had an award-winning student chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC). AWC is a professional organization that provides a community for networking, professional development and empowerment. But that chapter was located in Pullman, Wash.
Thanks to Shea, a senior in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication integrated strategic communication program at WSU Everett, and several classmates, the campus welcomed a new chapter of AWC student chapter to Everett. That club now gives Everett students the opportunity to gain professional skills before they enter the workforce.
“Being in the greater Seattle area, students have such a great advantage of connecting with the communication industry,” Shea said. “We have so many resources to connect with and learn from.”
This spring, AWC at WSU Everett is engaging in multiple networking events and bringing local, professional women in to speak to the club. “We attended the Seattle Interactive Conference last September which gave us insight into the communication industry, opportunities to network with professionals and also the ability to see where the industry is headed next,” Shea said.
“Having the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU Everett is an amazing opportunity for students interested in communication.” She added that earning the integrated strategic communication degree provides students with a great understanding of the communication field and allows each student to take that knowledge and apply it toward so many careers they’re passionate about.
“My favorite part of the communication industry is that it is always changing and there is always a new way to be connected and to stay informed,” said Shea. “Whether that’s web design, journalism, sports, governmental PR or non-profits, this program really gives students the base knowledge and then helps them find their passion.
